Do You Need a License to Braid Hair in Wisconsin? (2026 Rules)

A 2021 law (AB 121, signed July 2021) amended Wis. Stat. ch. 454 so that the definitions of barbering and cosmetology explicitly exclude natural hair braiding, ending the prior de facto 1,550-hour cosmetology requirement for braiders; the exclusion does not cover dyes, reactive chemicals, or chemical bonding agents (keratin/fusion bonds, tape).

Braiding exemptions and certificates typically cover natural hair work: braiding, twisting, locking, weaving, and extensions using natural or synthetic hair. They do NOT cover chemical services (relaxers, color), cutting, or treatments — those sit under the full cosmetology license everywhere.
