Do You Need a License to Braid Hair in West Virginia? (2026 Rules)

W. Va. Code § 30-27-3 states hair braiding, threading and any other item not spelled out are not regulated by the West Virginia Board of Barbers and Cosmetologists (exemption originally enacted via HB 2777 in 2015). Cosmetology licensure requires 1,800 hours.

Braiding exemptions and certificates typically cover natural hair work: braiding, twisting, locking, weaving, and extensions using natural or synthetic hair. They do NOT cover chemical services (relaxers, color), cutting, or treatments — those sit under the full cosmetology license everywhere.
