Tennessee requires a Hair Braider registration under the Cosmetology Act (Tenn. Code Ann. tit. 62, ch. 4): 16 hours of health-and-hygiene training (in person or online), age 14+, $30 fee, no exam. A broader Natural Hair Stylist license (300 hours, $60, PSI exam) exists for fuller natural-hair services.
What braiding covers — and what it does not
Braiding exemptions and certificates typically cover natural hair work: braiding, twisting, locking, weaving, and extensions using natural or synthetic hair. They do NOT cover chemical services (relaxers, color), cutting, or treatments — those sit under the full cosmetology license everywhere.
