Do You Need a License to Braid Hair in Pennsylvania? (2026 Rules)

Act 100 of 2024 (effective December 15, 2024) eliminated licensure for natural hair braiders, braider teachers, and braiding salons; the board no longer accepts these applications, and the former 300-hour license (49 Pa. Code § 7.32h) is now only a voluntary certification. Full cosmetology remains 1,250 hours (49 Pa. Code § 7.129).

Braiding exemptions and certificates typically cover natural hair work: braiding, twisting, locking, weaving, and extensions using natural or synthetic hair. They do NOT cover chemical services (relaxers, color), cutting, or treatments — those sit under the full cosmetology license everywhere. If your service menu stays in the braiding lane, the light path above is yours; if you plan to add color or cuts later, plan for the full license.
