Do You Need a License to Braid Hair in New Jersey? (2026 Rules)

New Jersey, formerly a holdout requiring the full 1,200-hour cosmetology-hairstylist license to braid, now issues a separate hair braiding specialty license under N.J.A.C. 13:28-1.1: a 40-hour course for applicants with at least 3 years of documented braiding experience, or a 50-hour course otherwise. The $50 exam fee includes the application fee per N.J.A.C. 13:28-5.1, with an initial individual license fee of $90 ($45 if issued in the second year of the renewal cycle).

Braiding exemptions and certificates typically cover natural hair work: braiding, twisting, locking, weaving, and extensions using natural or synthetic hair. They do NOT cover chemical services (relaxers, color), cutting, or treatments — those sit under the full cosmetology license everywhere.
