Do You Need a License to Braid Hair in Nebraska? (2026 Rules)

Neb. Rev. Stat. § 38-1075(3) exempts any person engaging solely in natural hair braiding from the Cosmetology, Electrology, Esthetics, Nail Technology, and Body Art Practice Act (enacted by LB 898 in 2016; broad definition in § 38-1042.01 includes extensions but not dyes or chemical straightening). The DHHS licensure page confirms no Nebraska license is needed to braid natural hair; full cosmetology now requires 1,800 hours (reduced from 2,100).

Braiding exemptions and certificates typically cover natural hair work: braiding, twisting, locking, weaving, and extensions using natural or synthetic hair. They do NOT cover chemical services (relaxers, color), cutting, or treatments — those sit under the full cosmetology license everywhere.
