Do You Need a License to Braid Hair in Missouri? (2026 Rules)

RSMo § 329.275 (enacted 2018 via HB 1500) exempts hair braiders from cosmetology licensure but requires a certificate of registration with the board: an application, a fee capped at $20, and viewing a 4-6 hour board-prepared instructional video on infection control and scalp disease. No school training hours are required; full cosmetology remains 1,500 hours.

Braiding exemptions and certificates typically cover natural hair work: braiding, twisting, locking, weaving, and extensions using natural or synthetic hair. They do NOT cover chemical services (relaxers, color), cutting, or treatments — those sit under the full cosmetology license everywhere.
