Do You Need a License to Braid Hair in Maryland? (2026 Rules)

Maryland's cosmetology definition (Md. Code, Bus. Occ. & Prof. § 5-101) expressly excludes services that create tension on hair strands by twisting, wrapping, weaving, extending, locking, or braiding by hand or mechanical device (without dyes or reactive/structure-altering chemicals), so braiders need no cosmetology or braiding license; local zoning/business rules may still apply.

Braiding exemptions and certificates typically cover natural hair work: braiding, twisting, locking, weaving, and extensions using natural or synthetic hair. They do NOT cover chemical services (relaxers, color), cutting, or treatments — those sit under the full cosmetology license everywhere.
