Louisiana still requires the special certificate/permit for alternative hair design (La. R.S. 37:583; LAC 46:XXXI) requiring 500 hours of instruction before braiding for pay — among the most restrictive in the nation. Deregulation bills failed: HB 509 (2025) passed the House but died in Senate committee, and HB 266 (2026, sanitation-quiz-only permit) remained in House Commerce when the 2026 session adjourned.

Braiding exemptions and certificates typically cover natural hair work: braiding, twisting, locking, weaving, and extensions using natural or synthetic hair. They do NOT cover chemical services (relaxers, color), cutting, or treatments — those sit under the full cosmetology license everywhere.
