Do You Need a License to Braid Hair in Iowa? (2026 Rules)

Natural hair braiders are excepted from cosmetology licensure under Iowa Code ch. 157 but must register on the state's Natural Hair Braiding Registry under Iowa Code § 135.37A; the registration requires no training hours and no fee. Iowa also cut cosmetology training from 2,100 to 1,550 hours in its barbering/cosmetology overhaul.

Braiding exemptions and certificates typically cover natural hair work: braiding, twisting, locking, weaving, and extensions using natural or synthetic hair. They do NOT cover chemical services (relaxers, color), cutting, or treatments — those sit under the full cosmetology license everywhere.
