Do You Need a License to Braid Hair in Illinois? (2026 Rules)

Illinois issues a dedicated Hair Braider license under Article IIIE of the Barber, Cosmetology, Esthetics, Hair Braiding, and Nail Technology Act (225 ILCS 410) requiring 300 hours of approved instruction (vs. 1,500 for cosmetology); IDFPR began accepting hair braider applications through its new CORE system in October 2024.

Braiding exemptions and certificates typically cover natural hair work: braiding, twisting, locking, weaving, and extensions using natural or synthetic hair. They do NOT cover chemical services (relaxers, color), cutting, or treatments — those sit under the full cosmetology license everywhere.
