Do You Need a License to Braid Hair in Florida? (2026 Rules)

Florida's former 16-hour hair braiding registration was fully repealed by HB 1193, the Occupational Freedom and Opportunity Act (signed June 30, 2020, effective July 1, 2020), which deregulated hair braiding, hair wrapping, and body wrapping entirely. Full cosmetology licensure (1,200 hours per Fla. Stat. § 477.019) is unchanged.

Braiding exemptions and certificates typically cover natural hair work: braiding, twisting, locking, weaving, and extensions using natural or synthetic hair. They do NOT cover chemical services (relaxers, color), cutting, or treatments — those sit under the full cosmetology license everywhere.
