Do You Need a License to Braid Hair in Delaware? (2026 Rules)

24 Del. C. § 5103(c)(8) exempts persons engaged in the practice of hair braiding from cosmetology/barbering licensure, provided there is no hair cutting or application of dyes/reactive chemicals; extensions may be attached only by natural means. Cosmetology requires 1,500 classroom hours per § 5107.

Braiding exemptions and certificates typically cover natural hair work: braiding, twisting, locking, weaving, and extensions using natural or synthetic hair. They do NOT cover chemical services (relaxers, color), cutting, or treatments — those sit under the full cosmetology license everywhere.
