Do You Need a License to Braid Hair in California? (2026 Rules)

The Board's official FAQ confirms hair braiding (like threading and wig styling) is not regulated by the Board and does not need to be performed by a licensee — braiding has been outside the Barbering and Cosmetology Act since 1999 (Cornwell v. Board; B&P Code § 7316 exclusions). Cosmetology dropped from 1,600 to 1,000 hours under SB 803 (effective Jan 1, 2022).

Braiding exemptions and certificates typically cover natural hair work: braiding, twisting, locking, weaving, and extensions using natural or synthetic hair. They do NOT cover chemical services (relaxers, color), cutting, or treatments — those sit under the full cosmetology license everywhere.
