Do You Need a License to Braid Hair in Arkansas? (2026 Rules)

The Natural Hair Braiding Protection Act (2015, HB 1177; Ark. Code Ann. §§ 17-26-501 to -505) exempts natural hair braiding from cosmetology regulation: § 17-26-504 states the practice is exempt from regulation under the chapter and from the Cosmetology Technical Advisory Committee, State Board of Health, and Department of Health; an optional voluntary certification exists.

Braiding exemptions and certificates typically cover natural hair work: braiding, twisting, locking, weaving, and extensions using natural or synthetic hair. They do NOT cover chemical services (relaxers, color), cutting, or treatments — those sit under the full cosmetology license everywhere.
