Do You Need a License to Braid Hair in Alabama? (2026 Rules)

Alabama currently requires a separate Natural Hair Stylist license (210 school hours or 420 apprentice hours) under Ala. Code Title 34, Ch. 7B. SB 183 (signed 2026) removes the licensing requirement for natural hair styling (braiding, locking, weaving without cutting/coloring/chemicals) effective October 1, 2026, after which licensure becomes voluntary.

Braiding exemptions and certificates typically cover natural hair work: braiding, twisting, locking, weaving, and extensions using natural or synthetic hair. They do NOT cover chemical services (relaxers, color), cutting, or treatments — those sit under the full cosmetology license everywhere.
